Spirit of Corby 2014

Jean holding both of her awards on the night

Jean Devenney, our in-house crafting volunteer, won Spirit of Corby 2014! Nominated by our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Laura Gravener, Jean was humbled with just a nomination, but the votes of everyone in the community piled in and got her shortlisted for the award - and then she ran away with the award, not only in her category but the overall 'Spirit of Corby' award on the night!

Laura explained the process: 'As I read the criteria for the Creative Spirit Award, one name popped into my head, our volunteer and friend, Jean Devenney.  The perfect candidate for this award.'

With the nomination secure, votes having poured in from the community in Jean's favour, Laura told us about the night:

'Determined not to miss the awards, I attended on the evening fingers crossed that Jean's 10 year contribution to the Community was recognised.  What happened next even surprised me!

I was so excited for her I was leaping up and down and laughed as I could see the shock on Jean's face.  This followed by bewilderment and then delight, a very proud moment for family and friends.  A well-deserved candidate.

As Volunteer Co-ordinator at Lakelands Hospice, I am very proud of our team of volunteers who choose to make a difference in the community.  Many deserve recognition for the support they give and the manner in which they give it.  However, on this occasion, all at Lakelands agree: Jean is an extra ordinary person who constantly puts others before herself & truly deserves these awards.'
